Communism

With recent Blue State mayoral victories by so-called Democratic Socialists ( Communists) like Zohran Mamdani in NYC, I was wondering about the history of American Communism.

The Communist Party was founded in 1919 in the US. In the mid 1930’s the CPUSA (Communist Party of the United States of America ) allied with liberals, progressives, and the New Deal…active in strikes and anti-fascist membership, peaking at around 70,000 in the late 1930’s.

The 1940’s, 50’s in the Truman Administration created loyalty oaths and McCarthyism, targeting subversives and those aligned with the Soviets. Membership plummeted after revelations of Stalin's crimes and the 1956 Soviet invasion of Hungary.

By the 1980s, membership was very low amongst the broader collapse of Soviet style Communism…around 2-5,000 in the 2010s, with growth estimates of 15-20,000 in the mid-2020s. (AI)

Today, after the 1989 revolution brought down Eastern European regimes with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the USSR, only a handful remain while retaining one-party rule and describing themselves as Socialist States under a dictatorship of the Proletariat…China, Vietnam, Laos, Cuba, and North Korea.

It is hard to understand why this new Socialist/Communist revolution is growing, but then again, if you promise enough FREE STUFF to our young people who are having difficulty financially, they are voting with their pocketbook and don’t really understand the despair of Socialism/Communism.
